OUR
FOUNDING MOTHERS
A concern for the number of Hispanic high school and college dropouts
coupled with less than satisfactory support and resources available
for the advancement of Hispanics, in particular Hispanic women,
encouraged a group of female students at the Purdue University Campus
in West Lafayette, IN to develop an organization that would specifically
address issues like these.
Motivated by their own experiences as women of varying backgrounds
and nationalities, the founding members of this organization challenged
the women of Purdue University to develop skills necessary for their
success in the professional world. They believed that by persistently
offering encouragement and support for the academic advancement
of the female student body they could promote unity and empowerment
within their own community and provide a model for other women to
follow. These courageous and determined young women dreamt of sisterhood:
a true bond symbolizing love, support and guidance…like the
bond between true friends.
On August 28, 1991 this dream was realized, and Delta Phi Mu Sorority
was born. Our founding mothers Rosita Serrano Galarza, Annette Zöe
Rosa, Rosa Ana Fernandez, Guadalupe Rosalinda Acevez, and Sylvia
Medellin began the legacy of Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood
at the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University.
As bonds grew stronger, more members were added to the Delta Phi
Mu family. The distinguished Ladies of Delta Phi Mu realized their
moral obligation to all women and communities. By incorporating
into their founding principles the promotion of intercultural exchange,
the Ladies of the Delta Phi Mu Sorority hoped to serve as an outlet
for all women to make use of. Since the membership of Delta Phi
Mu Sorority now represents many different ethnicities and cultures,
the women of Delta Phi Mu have adopted a second motto: “Different
Worlds, One Sisterhood!”
In the spirit of growth and multicultural expansion the hand of
Sisterhood was soon expanded to the Ladies in Southern Illinois
University-Carbondale on December 5, 1999 when the school of M.I.R.A.C.L.E.S.
was initiated into active membership. Soon after, that same hand
was extended to yet another university in the Chicago Land Region
on May 12, 2000 when the school of A.U.R.O.R.A. was also initiated
in active membership. Finally on February 16, 2001 Delta Phi Mu
Sorority was incorporated.
Delta Phi Mu is a public service organization governed by our principles
of Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood, while promoting intercultural
exchange. We were founded upon many goals and aspirations that are
summarized in our motto: “La Esperanza
De El Futuro Esta En Las Manos De La Mujer!”
